The Great Gate Company’s free guide ‘Buying Wrought Iron Gates & Railings will take the mystery out of wrought iron. It covers planning permission, how to compare quotes and the difference between different types of materials and finishing.
Wrought ironwork is the process by which metal is formed into new and usually decorative products.
Traditional wrought iron is forged in a hot fire and then hammered and crafted into shape. This is a highly skilled and slow process, which takes years of training.
In modern day terms. wrought ironwork has come to mean mild steel that is welded together. Gates and railings are manufactured from steel sections that are cut to length and welded together.
The process involves creating the same heat as a traditional forge but using welding equipment instead of a fire. During the process, steel distorts and bends so standard size products are made in a ‘jig’ which makes the process faster.
This is why standard size products are so much cheaper than bespoke.
