FINISHING OPTIONS EXPLAINED

The guide below  sets out the characteristics of different finishes.

Primed or Painted Finish

This is a hand painted finish, either primed with red oxide primer or painted in black or green hammerite.   A red oxide primer gives an attractive rustic finish in its own right or can be painted with any good quality metal paint such as hammerite.   Primed or painted finish are not guaranteed rust proof and will need  regular maintenance.  

Galvanised Finish

Hot zinc dip galvanising is a dip into a bath of molten zinc. When the zinc cools it forms an impenetrable coat around the steel which makes it rust proof.  Initially galvanised items are bright silver and this fades to a dull grey in time.  They can be painted immediate if pretreated with a mordant solution or painted after weathering, about 6  months.  We recommend galvanising for coastal, city and harsh environments.

Powder coated Finish

Powder coating is an alternative to a hand painted finish and is baked on in an oven.  It is a high quality finish and there is a wide choice of colours.  Powder coating, like ordinary paint is subject to rusting if not galvanised first but is likely to provide a longer lasting finish.

Galvanised and Powder coated Finish

This consists of items that are galvanised first to make them rust proof and subsequently powder coated for a high quality low maintenance finish.
