MEASURING UP FOR RAILINGS
General Guidelines
1. Measure in millimetres if possible.
2. Always measure ‘ACTUAL GAP’ sizes. We will make adjustments for fitting and fixings.
3. Check measurements twice.
4. Take more measurements rather than less.
5. Please take measurements from the ROADSIDE of the property.
6. If you cannot follow the step by step guide, please email a photo and we will mark on the photo the measurements that you need to take. sales@thegreatgatecompany.co.uk
7. Do not worry if everything is not straight and level. We will make allowances for this in manufacture.
Step by Step Guide
Railings for walls
1. Starting at the left hand side, measure the overall height of the left hand pillar from the ground to the top of the pillar. Measure down the centre of the pillar and measure again at the side of the pillar where the railings will start.
2. In addition, if the pillar has a pillar top, take the measurement to the underside of the pillar top and measure how much the pillar top lip sticks out. Take this measurement at the side of the pillar where the railings will start.
3. Measure from the ground to the top of the wall at the side of the pillar where the railing will start.
4. Measure from the top of the wall to the underside of the pillar top and to the top of the pillar if different.
5. Measure the gap between the pillars. Measure on top of the wall and take the measurement higher up as well where the railing is likely to end. Sometimes pillars are not straight so it is important to take both measurements.
Repeat steps 1-4 for right hand pillar.
6.Put a spirit level on the top of the wall. Is it flat? If it is not flat, measure the angle or how much it falls or rises over the gap.
We usually allow a clearance of 25mm from the wall to the bottom of the railing. If you would like this to be more or less, please let us know.
We need to know how high from the wall you would like the railings to go to. Please tell us the distance required from the wall to the TOP OF THE FINIAL. If you are not sure, please send a photo and we will make a recommendation.
N.B. If the pillars are made of very lumpy stone, but a rule upright against the wall and measure the gap from the edge of the ruler.
Gate
Take the measurements of both pillars and the gap between the pillars as in 1-6 above.
In addition, standing on the roadside, please tell us which side you would like your gate to hinge.
We will make the gate to open inwards towards the property unless you specify otherwise.
Please check whether the pathway is sloping. If it is sloping upwards, it may stop the gate opening. We usually make pedestrian gates with a gap of 65 mm. If you need a lower or higher gap, please tell us.
If possible, mark your measurements on a sketch in the same or similar style to the attached drawing. Please take particular care, using dimension arrows to show where the measurement begins and ends.
