Measuring Up for Steps
Basic Dimensions
Take these dimensions at the side of the step where the handrail will be.
1) In order to make a handrail, we need to know the dimensions of the ‘going’ and ‘rise’ of each step.
On the attached drawing, the ‘going’ is 443 mm and the ‘rise’ is 206 mm
2) Some steps have a top stone or paving slab, we need to know the size of this.
On the attached drawing the depth of the top stone is 35 mm.
3) Some steps lip over at the edge of the step. We need to know the size of the lip (how far it sticks out).
On the attached drawing the dimension of the lip is 25mm.
Fixing the Handrail
There are several methods of fixing:
1) With base plates bolted to the top of the step.
2) With extended posts with tab fixings down the side of the step stack.
3) Fixed directly into the concrete or patio at the base of the steps.
We can advise on best method of fixing with a photo.
