CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF WROUGHT IRON GATES & RAILINGS

Galvanised Product

If your gates have been galvanised, they have been dipped in a hot zinc oxide bath at a temperature of 400 degrees centigrade. This provides an impenetrable coating which protects the steel from air and water, meaning that your product will not rust.

After galvanising, the product has been etched which allows the paint or powder coating  to adhere to the galvanising.    If you have opted for ‘galvanised only’ product, your product will be sufficiently weathered to accept paint within 6 months.

During the first year, particularly if you are near the sea, you may find that small specks of white ‘leach’ through the paint.  This is oxide residue from the galvanising process and can be wiped or washed off.  It is nothing to worry about and will settle down after time.   Very occasionally moisture may have been trapped in the welds prior to galvanising in which case it can sometimes cause a rust-coloured  stain.  This is not rust and if this happens, just brush it off and touched up with a little of the paint provided and  it should not return.

Painted only Finish

The product has been given one coat of paint before leaving the factory.   It is a good idea to paint the product again within three  months to get a good build up of paint to help protect the product from rust.  Thereafter you can paint the product to ‘freshen’ it up.   You can paint the product with any good quality metal paint, such as ‘Hammerite’, which is readily available in DIY Stores.

If the product has been painted in ‘matt’ or ‘satin’ and you wish to replicate this, you can buy the paint from us.

If you would like us to repaint your gates for you, please call us, we offer a painting and maintenance service.

Powder coating

If your product has been powder coated, electro statically charged paint particles have been baked on in a hot oven.  Powder coated product will usually not need repainting for 3-5 years, sometimes longer, depending upon the environment.  When the gate needs repainting you can use a good quality metal paint or spray.  You may wish to purchase an aerosol powder coat spray.   These are available from autobody or large DIY shops and can be used to touch up if the paint is damaged. The ral colour for black gloss is 9005.

Hinges and Bolts
It is recommended that you check gate hinges and moving parts every 12 months and apply grease to keep them running smoothly.

Note
To keep your gate and railings looking as new as possible, wipe them over with a damp clean cloth occasionally to remove dust and grime.
